Incentive programs for electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Canada

There are several incentive programs to help Canadians purchase an electric vehicle (EV), a plug-in hybrid EV or a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. These subsidies are generally administered by one of the three main levels of government: federal, provincial or municipal. These programs are valid for residents of the territory concerned.

If you're looking to save even more, we also have a guide outlining subsidies for the purchase and installation of a Level 2 home charging station in Canada.

Federal Subsidy for Electric Cars and Plug-In Hybrids in Canada: the ZEVI program

With the aim of reducing greenhouse gasses in Canada, the Government of Canada has decided to introduce financial assistance to encourage the acquisition of zero-emission vehicles such as electric cars, plug-in hybrids and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

A tax incentive is available if the vehicle meets the program's requirements:

  • Electric or plug-in hybrid passenger car whose base model has an MSRP of less than $55,000. The more expensive version of the vehicle must not have an MSRP exceeding $65,000.
    OR
  • Family car, pickup truck, sport utility vehicle, minivan, van or specialty vehicle whose base model has an MSRP of less than $60,000. The more expensive version of the vehicle must not have an MSRP exceeding $70,000.

To find out more information about individual models, see the list of all eligible vehicles by model year and version.

There are two types of incentives:

  1. Battery electric vehicles, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, and long-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, all with an electric range of 50 kilometers or more, can receive $5,000.
  2. Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) with an electric range of less than 50 kilometers can receive $2,500.
The Zero Emission Vehicle Incentive (ZEVI) program will continue until March 31, 2025 (or until available funds are depleted).

The subsidy is applied directly by the car dealer at the point of sale. The dealer is therefore responsible for completing the required documentation for you to receive the incentive.

Full program details are available on the Government of Canada website.
